Film promotion: pitching

Title: Obsession
A dedicated young college boy is enchanted by the beauty of the new girl who is mysterious and alluring causing his feelings to become more than lust until he can’t bear to see her with anyone else apart from him and takes his thoughts into actions.

This film is a thriller/drama which is set in London and is similar to the film vertigo from the director Alfred Hitchcock. This film will appeal to those to the age of 15+ who are interested in horrors.
The story is based on the character Chris who lets love blind him into evil as he falls dangerously in love with stunning, admirable Jada who is flirtatious and misleading.

The narrative of my film: 18 year old Chris who is devoted to his life as a drama student almost instantly falls love struck with young Jada who becomes popular and idolised. But with her deceitful ways she hypothesises him into believing there are more than friends. Jada may think of this as a game that most young adults play, however Chris is very serious about letting others know their ‘status’ and decides to teach her a lesson.

Film trailer and poster analysis

Film poster analysis:
One of the key conventions on this poster is the title (Django), which is bold and in red. Another convention is it has information about the director as it says its his new film and this shows that people familiar with this director might know what kind of genre it is and whether they would be interested in watching his latest film. it also features the stars on the cast. this is effect because it helps the audience know whether they would interested in that particular film as some actors play certain roles in the same genres of film. At the bottom centre it has the production blurb. It has a central image of the main character and secondary images including two other important characters. They are both holding guns which suggests it is a western also we can figure that out due to the style of clothing.behind it of two other men. it also has the release date at the bottom. At the top it has the tag line.

Film trailer analysis:
At the start of the trailer it has the website, therefore one convention in this is social media. Also it has the institution (sony pictures). it then has clips from the main sections of the film. throughout the trailer there is non-diegetic sound. Also there is diegetic sound coming from the characters. The music used sounds like western music which fits in the genre. This is effective for the audience understand what kind of film they will be watching. it has on screen text which mentions the director. There are a lot of close up shots used to introduce the characters and the narrative. At the end it has the release date.

In my opinion the poster and trailer do successfully promote the film because they explain the genre and give an insight to what the film will be like. They have also used many of the key conventions for the film.

1) What film have you chosen?
Django Unchained 2) Why did you choose this film in particular?
Its an very interesting film to research about and looks like there will be a lot to talk about in terms of the institutional information.
Institutional background
Use IMDB to find out the institutions behind your chosen film. Find your film, click on Company Credits and then look for the production company and UK distributor.

1) What was the film studio or production company behind your chosen film? E.g. Warner Brothers, Paramount etc.

- Weinstein company and Columbia pictures.

2) Who was the distributor for the theatrical release of the film in the UK?

- Sony pictures
No brand loyalty
1) What genre does your chosen film fit into?
   -western

2) How can you tell it fits that genre? Be specific with reference to the trailer.

- It is a Western due to the fact it is in a american country setting. Other clues is that there is a lot of gun shooting and men riding houses. the men also look like cowboys in some scenes and its old fashioned.

3) Is your chosen movie a sequel?

-No

3a) If Yes, how does the film use the original movie or franchise as part of its marketing?
3b) If No, are previous films by the writer, director or star mentioned in the trailer?
     -No

It’s all a matter of timing
1) What was the UK release date for your chosen film?

   18th January 2013

2) When did the first trailer appear on YouTube for your movie? Find the earliest example you can and embed it in your blog.

3) What other examples of marketing (teaser trailers, main trailers, newspaper or TV interviews etc.) can you find for your chosen film from before the film’s release date?

It’s a social thing
1) What was the word-of-mouth like for your chosen film? If you can’t find tweets (probably blocked) use the IMDB user review rating or the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer rating to judge whether the public have given the movie a good review.

"I rarely bother to give reviews after watching a movie. But holy crap this was a good movie. I'm pretty sure it is the best movie i've seen all year. and yes i saw dark knight rises, avengers, flight, Argo, hobbit, etc... Tarantino delivers and then some.. Every actor is on point. Awesome performances, great story, it will definitely take you on a ride full of surprises. I would recommend everyone to go watch this film, it is truly a great film.. unless you're a little kid.. don't go watch this movie if you're a little kid. I've seen all of Tarantinos movies and I have to say this has been my favorite. It is just awesome in every way. I'm usually very harsh on movies. I mean ill watch just about anything, but for me to think a movie was actually "good", takes a whole lot. DiCaprio was like i've never seen him before, and being one of my favorite actors, it was a little weird at first. But he does an outstanding job at selling his role within seconds of his first appearance. Waltz delivered as i knew he would. and Jaime Foxx, well he did not fall behind. Last but not least Jackson was hilarious and also did an amazing job... Go watch the movie, it is worth it."

"At first I didn't want to see this movie because of some political remarks made by Jamie Foxx and Samuel Jackson, two of my previously favorite actors, but Quintin Tarentino is a great director, so I broke down and saw it. Glad I did. This was absolutely one of the best movies of the year. Although Jamie Foxx has top billing, this film would not have been anywhere as good without Christoph Waltz. He stole every scene he was in. Brilliant acting and great comedic delivery. Leo was great too. Lots of blood, something expected in most of Quintins movies, but a great story. Also expect to hear the N word about 2000 times. Cristoph Waltz should get the Oscar for his performance. Should get nominated for best picture. This is absolutely a must see."

From reading most of these reviews, I've decided that the audience was very pleased with the film and had a positive reaction to the film.

2) Find three quotes (no more than 25 words each) from user reviews of your movie to create a picture of what the public reaction to the film has been. Post them on your blog.

Risky business

   $30,688,000
3) How much money has the film made in total? (Look for the subheading ‘Gross’ which has the total box-office earnings listed).

shots

high angle-makes person look small and weak
mediuim

over the shoulder shot

unusual shot

Minority report

by the director using a medium close up, it allows us (the audience) to see the seriousness of the police and their facial expressions.it shows enough background for us to see other police in the background so we understand there is a large group of officers to show they have a important case to solve. by this shot being a medium close up it allows the audience to see the officers mean business and are going to go after someone. the juxtaposition of the first clip showing tom cruise running in a different direction of these men mean they are meant to capture tom cruise.

this picture is a long shot as it shows plenty of background and we can see action going on in the photo. due to the angle of this shot we can see the scene is taking place in a warehouse and that there may be two rivals there to sort out dodgy business. it always enough space for us to see a man from head to toe in the background and clearly shows a large car in the photo. i reckon the editor did this in order to create a action feel to the audience as perhaps a big fight will happen.

the editor chose a medium close up here but has put a focus on the character. this can show that he is playing a main role in this scene and perhaps is someone important in the film. the medium close up allows us to see some background so the audience can see that the man is somewhere quite dark and unusual. the angle is aimed more at the mans face therefore the editor wants us to see his expression.

Media Ananlysis-Key concepts

Language

One language aspect from this advert is that on the bottom right corner is the subway logo in its special font and also there slogan 'eat fresh'. it has two main images which are promoting the meal deals of their sandwiches. They are very eye catching and have been made to look appetising to people that are working or studying and where they should go for lunch. The main thing that attracts our attention is low cost on the food. Also it has information about the locations of local subways and has the subway trade mark information.

Institution

The deal was produced by the company subway and is available to people in norwhich. They have advertised it to make it look cheap and tasty in order for people to go there instead of food restaurants like mc donalds or kfc.

Audience

This is targeted at both genders for ages of 13 to 35 or perhaps more. i think this is for people on the go that want a good value lunch or meal deal that is healthy and worth the price. i reckon this is also targeted at people that eat at other fast food restaurants  such as mc donalds or burger king etc. they have done this in order to attract more customers for profit. I think this is also targeted at people who are in college or teachers and workers that go out to eat for lunch.

Representation

this advert presents sandwiches that are well priced in the area of Norwich. the meaning of this advert is promote subways value deals.

'Video games and heavy metal make young people more likely to commit violent crimes'

I agree because i think games such as gta change the mind frame of young people and make them think it is acceptable to be a nuisance in the community without sanctions. Also heavy metal can cause teens to create negative vibes causing anti-social behaviour leading to violent crimes. Music that speaks of being disruptive can stick in young peoples mind as they are vunerable.

News Bulletin

1.

Greenford news story:
National news story:
London news story:
Sports news story:
Funny news story

My groups Greenford news story was about sports day being postponed due to teacher strike. We chose this because we think it is vital for Key stage three in ghs to know that sports isn't on the normal day and to tell the others (students and teachers) that the children aren't happy about it.
Our national news story was about the shortage of working anti-biotics. This is very important news that everyone should be aware of because we need anti-biotics for things like colds and infections and without we could die from treatable things like temperatures.
The London news story was about some benches having children's story printed onto them. We chose this because it is interesting and so if we see this display around London, we know why.
Our sports news story was about Belgium winning the game. We chose this because many people are interested in the world cup.
Our funny news story was about gold fishes being smarter than we think. This is a generally interesting fact that others may want to know.

3.

The order of our broadcasts was:
Greenford news story:
National news story:
London news story:
Sports news story:
Funny news story
We chose this because it makes sense to start with our community and then national and London news because its within our continent. we did sports next because its more world news. last we did funny news because its good to end on something light as news can be depressing at times.

4.

To make sure my script was the right length, I gave my self a word count of only 150. I then wrote all the key information in a way that made sense and then the others in my group timed me. I took out any irrelevant information and then my script became perfect.

5.

To make sure our stories were easy to understand, I used formal language in a clear voice so it was easy for all ages to pick up on the news.

6

To make sure my presentation was professional, I spoke clearly and sat in a tidy environment. also I kept in contact with the camera and made sure my surroundings weren't noisy.

7.

In my group my role was to present the news and I helped with the typing as it helps when comes to speaking off the script.

8.

I would say my group worked 4/5. this is because we all helped each other and the presentation went reasonably successfully.

9.

For my team to be more successful, i think we should have each stuck to a specific role so that we had the information quicker.

10.

If I had a opportunity to do this again I would speak a bit slower just so I don't make a pronunciation mistake. I would also give myself more time to get familiar with my script.
